With the family ever expanding and spreading
out throughout the country it was decided
that a family website might be in order. It is hoped that news,
photos etc. for all our family events may be posted here to help
keep all family members informed as to what happened and hopefully
this may become an easy way to share photos of family gatherings.

Hertford Spring Bank Holiday 2011
What a great weekend. Barbara & Mike, John, Jenny & Louise, Sarah & Luke all camped at Hertford for the weekend and were joined by Alastair & Michelle on Saturday to be introduced to the newest member of the family Iris who seemed to enjoy the camping experience. Weatherwise we were very lucky with only a small amount of light rain but quite strong winds. Luckily our pitches were nice and sheltered and the wind was not to much of a problem. Sunday saw us visiting the Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey. A very interesting place to visit on a beautiful site. Interesting exhibitions on a historic industrial site that was in use making explosives & developing rockets from 1651 to 1991. Well worth a visit, to much to see in one day. We managed two barbeques over the weekend in the dry fine evenings albeit a little chilly. All in all not quite the weather that we are used to on family camps! Looking forward to next time.
Well its Spring time again and with the weather in Britain getting increasingly warm and settled Steve goes on a trip to Uganda as part of a church work party. You can follow his exploits on his blog http://remlapgs.blogspot.com/

role!
Sand sea and stingrays
The Kent Kite Flyers were asked by an ITV film crew to take part in
filming part of a new TV show called “All at sea”, this
involves Bradley Walsh, chef Rosemary Shrager and
presenter Mark Durden Smith sailing from Cornwall to
London stopping off at ‘Hidden Gems’ around the south coast. The
researchers had heard of the Margate Kite Festival on third weekend in
September and had managed to arrange to meet the world renowned kite maker
Peter Lynn and have him demonstrate some of his kites.
Stephen had assumed that he would turn up and fly some kites to give
background interest to the main filming. The day was awful it was blowing
around 23mph and was grey and overcast. He has very few kites that will fly in
those winds and when Peter Lynn found Stephen, a lone Kite flyer on Margate beach, he
wasn’t sure he would be able to fly his kites either.
By the time the film crew arrived with Peters bags the wind had slackened
a little and Stephen was asked if he would help with the kite. They set about
burying a large plank of wood with a rope round it to anchor the kite and then
Peter produced the kite they were to fly. This was a 10metre wide 25 metre long
Sting Ray (picture taken two days later at the Margate Festival) with Stephen’s
help this monster was launched and then bought down again so that when the
“Cast” arrived they would have no idea of the size of the kite
which it turned out they were going to have a go at flying.
Need less to say they were aghast at the size and latter after they
crashed it even more amazed that they could stand inside the kite whilst Peter
repaired it.
After the filming Mark asked if we had any steerable kites they could
have a go with Peter only had a large light wind kite so Stephen offered the use
of his ‘Peter Lynn Vibe’ a training kite for boarders & buggiest,
he then spent about half an hour teaching Bradley Walsh and Mark Durden Smith how to fly this small foil kite. Unfortunately
this wasn’t filmed but we can’t all have our five minutes of fame.
It is believed that the series is due to be screened in the
Spring 2010 but we suspect all you’ll see of Stephen is the back of his jacket.
It will be obvious thought It has Kent Kite Flyers in gold right across it.

Stephen Hawking!
Sorry that should read
Stephen - Hawking!
After a wonderful
week afloat with his brothers Stephen used the gift
given him by Richard and David and spent an afternoon
in the fields around Eynsford in Kent with three other
hopefuls, two Falconers from Eagle Heights and Four
Harris Hawks.
This
was a wonderful experience not only learning about the
art of ‘Hawking’ but also the natural habits of this
American Hawk which are used to good effect when used
for hunting. The readers will be pleased to know that
the birds where unsuccessful that afternoon. (no fluffy
bunnies were hurt during the making of this experience)
